Protecting the songbirds in Java

Indonesia is one of the most biologically rich, yet also most fragile regions in the world. Its countless islands have given rise to entirely unique species. However, due to their island isolation, these species are far more vulnerable to any disturbances, and many have been pushed to the brink of extinction as a result of human activity.

Prague Zoo has long supported the Cikananga Conservation Breeding Centre for songbirds in Java, focusing in particular on species such as the Javan green magpie (Cissa thalassina), the Sumatran laughingthrush (Garrulax bicolor), and the Javan pied myna (Gracupica jalla), which rank among the rarest and most endangered birds in the world. These species are negatively affected by human activities—especially illegal hunting, the bird trade, and habitat loss due to deforestation.

Thanks to financial support from Prague Zoo, new aviaries have been built, along with facilities for breeding insects used as live feed, and educational and awareness activities have been carried out. Given the success in breeding endangered songbirds, it is necessary to further expand and improve insect-rearing capacities to ensure the highest quality conditions. This also includes adequate laboratory equipment for regular veterinary examinations.
