Conservation of the rare northern buffed-cheeked gibbon

Northern buffed-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus annamensis), inhabiting the dense rainforests of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, are unfortunately also among the endangered species. Populations of these agile and vocal primates in the wild are declining mainly due to habitat destruction and illegal hunting.
Successful conservation of the northern buffed-cheeked gibbons requires strengthened law enforcement, environmental education, and scientific research on this still understudied species. In Vietnam, where approximately 80% of all remaining individuals live, Prague Zoo supports educational activities in cooperation with the German organization Stiftung Artenschutz.
