Our team in Tbilisi

17. 06. 2015

People feel sympathy to the zoo and target the negative emotion towards the army, as it was killing the animals in the zoo for no purpose - for instance the tamed white lion or lion cubs. Also the uncertainty about the numbers of dead animals is partly a result of the conflict with the army, which took the zoo after the floods and ordered employees to leave, therefore they don´t know, how many animals were shot by the army.

We were very useful here yesterday - the soldiers and rescue workers are helping with technique, but they don´t want to look for dead animals and remove them, the local keepers are willing to do it but they are still in a state of shock. The work, our people are doing, is simply amazing, also the directors from zoos in Zlín and Ústí should know about it. They created an excellent team. Helpfulness, calmness, power and skills (searching for and finding solutions in difficult situations, emergency solutions...) and at the same time compassion and correct attitude towards locals, no dissonant tone.

People here show a lot of solidarity (I don´t know if only to the zoo, but definitely to the victims of the catastrophe). For example there is a station in front of the zoo, where local people are bringing food and drinks for the volunteers, somebody bakes a cake, somebody brings fruit and vegetable from his own garden, somebody buys bottled water. By the way, water was not running in the zoo yesterday, as they cut it off during cleaning. It complicated a bit our hygiene before leaving for the hotel.
