Frolicking siblings, joeys jumping out of pouches and young animals simply discovering the world: Prague Zoo has welcomed its spring newborns, and its pavilions and enclosures are full of life. This year, the Gobi exhibit has reported its first Przewalski’s horse foal, while Darwin Crater first welcomed a wombat joey and now a long-nosed potoroo — a small feeding specialist — has peeked out from its mother’s pouch. The meerkats are caring for their new arrivals at the Africa House, while young takins and camels can also be seen in the zoo’s upper grounds.

The Przewalski’s horse foal born on Friday is taking increasingly confident steps; nevertheless, it still stays close to its mother. The mare, Victoria II, is a first-time parent, but so far she is doing well. Lenka Poliaková, Prague Zoo’s director, said: “For me, Prague Zoo is at its most beautiful in spring. A walk through the grounds is now enriched by the presence of newborns. Visitors can look forward not only to seeing their playfulness, but also the different forms of parental care.”

In April, Prague Zoo is open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The programme of events can be found on the website and in the mobile app, which also offers discounts compared with the ticket office and allows users to skip the queue and head straight in.

Hop! A small long-nosed potoroo, the second in Prague Zoo’s history, is currently making its first explorations of Darwin Crater. As an adult, this small marsupial’s diet will consist mainly of fungi. Examples of its diet include oyster mushrooms and button mushrooms. The joey is pictured here with its mother.
