The vineyard returns

The construction of th Rákos house, the home of exotic birds, made it necessary to revitalize the slope above the site. The slope had been overgrown with self-sown trees, and the only traces that had survived of the original terraces consisted of scattered, dilapidated remains of a retaining wall. There was a risk of rockfall, which would have been dangerous for the house.

Grapes for the zoo
We have replanted the slope with grapevine, which used to be cultivated here in the past. We have selected four white grapevine varieties developed at the grape breeding institute in Freiburg, Germany. They are environmentally friendly and highly resistant to diseases and pests. Their grapes do not ripen simultaneously but rather one after the other, which means that the harvest is staggered over a longer period of time. Fruit from this slope enriches the diet of our zoo’s fruit-eating birds and primates.
