Šiška is three months old. She´s now eating pulp from her mother´s bowl
Šiška, a female pangolin at Prague Zoo, is a quarter of a year old. Although she is still drinking her mother's milk, she is slowly switching to her parents' diet, thus getting through another critical period for the first pangopup in Europe.
"Šiška is now three months old, weighs over a kilogram, and not only does she eat her entire portion of pulp, but she also polishes off her mother's food,” said Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo’s director. He went on to say that the breeding team is still consulting with experts from Taipei Zoo, where Šiška's parents - a pair of Chinese pangolins, a female, Run Hou Tang, and a male, Guo Bao – originally came from last April.
Like her parents, Šiška receives a special pulp with bee larvae as its basis. “She reacts to the pulp’s smell during the morning feed. We can see on the cameras that her tongue shoots out of her mouth even before she has woken up,” said keeper David Vala, adding that people can watch them being fed during the Breakfast with the Pangolins programme. Unlike normal visitor hours, when the exhibit has a nocturnal regime, people taking part in the programme can see the pangolins during the daylight hours.
What’s more, the Breakfast with the Pangolins experience financially supports pangolin conservation in the wild. Available dates can be found here.
