Europe: The Danube Delta

The largest river of the European Union ends its journey of over 2,800 kilometres at the Black Sea, between Romania and Ukraine. It is at its delta that the richest wetland in Europe can be found.
A maze of oxbow channels, lakes, sandy islets and reed beds is a true birdwatchers’ paradise. More than 300 species of birds can be seen here. Many of them nest in the Danube delta, such as the eastern white pelican, the glossy ibis or the black-winged stilt. For many more, it is an important wintering ground.
The Danube Delta is also home to some 45 species of freshwater fish, including sturgeons, and supports one of the last populations of the critically endangered European mink. Because of its natural value, the site is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
