Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo I missed the first two mountain bongos this year – by that I mean I did not see them on the day they were born - but the third one was a Sunday baby and I managed to be there. I found it lying at the feet of his now 14-year-old mother Maureen, who was watching me attentively. Everything seemed to be running smoothly....

The rearing of Šiška, the female Chinese pangolin, was earthshaking, not just because of the setbacks associated with it, but also because she is the first pangopup of these unique scaly mammals to be bred in Europe. Photo Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo Šiška, the female Chinese pangolin, is now six months old and has switched from breast milk to an adult diet. This is why, last week, Prague Zoo declared her the first newborn pangolin to have been successfully reared in Europe. In relation to this historic achievement, there have been many questions from the media and...

Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague zoo The female of Chinese pangolin Šiska was half-a-year-old on Wednesday. We can consider her breeding completed – and we can add another item to the list of historical achievements of Prague Zoo, in this case in bold.

Kea chicks taking up residence in Rákos’ Pavilion. The seemingly drably coloured parrot does honour to its order with colourful marking on its underwing and rump. Photo Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo The kea chicks have taken up residence in the exhibition with their parents. The little parrots were artificially fed in the rear facilities, so it is only now that they have met the parent pair – a male, Rudy, and a female, Judy. This makes the first aviary in the Rákos’ Pavilion near the main entrance a very lively place...

The month-old mare Barunka can be seen in the large paddock at Dívčí hrady, which is managed by Prague Zoo, together with her five-year-old mother Khamiina and five other horses. Photo Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo This morning, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala christened the Przewalski’s horse foal at Prague’s Dívčí hrady. The one-month-old mare was given the name Barunka. Prime Minister Fiala is not only the foal’s godfather, above all he is sponsoring the project aimed at returning these, the last of the wild horses, to...

Aerial view of the base in the Valley of Monasteries, with the South Monastery Creek in the background. Photo by Miroslav Bobek Whenever we release in western Mongolia Przewalski’s horses transported from Europe, I experience a feeling of satisfaction. Of course… However, I had a similar feeling also last week, when we returned to the East of Mongolia, the Valley of Monasteries, after half a year.

Prague Zoo’s female Chinese pangolin is the first of these scaly mammals to be born in Europe. Photo: Petr Hamerník, Prague Zoo The five-month-old Chinese pangolin – Šiška – is becoming more and more active, she has almost switched to “solid” food and her weight is approaching 1,600 grams. This means Prague Zoo is close to a historic success.

Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo I have collected some photos of butterflies during my walks around the zoo. When I looked at them yesterday, I realized that it is a decent collection and includes some very rare species. Even the experts, who determined the relevant species, refer to a few shots from Sklenářka in their reports.

The bush dog puppies have already passed their first critical period and Prague Zoo’s visitors can now observe them larking about in the enclosure close to the polar bear exhibit. Photo Oliver Le Que, Prague Zoo Prague Zoo’s bush dogs had puppies. Visitors can now watch the puppy pair in the outdoor enclosure. After being here for five years, these South American carnivores managed to breed. This is the first litter of a newly set up pair of these difficult-to-breed wild dogs.

Photo: Miroslav Bobek, Prague Zoo In Darwin Crater we have recently introduced Winkleigh, the wombat female, to the public. And now we also have a contemporary of dinosaurs in this exhibit. It is Wollemia nobilis, whose unbelievable story began to unfold in front of the eyes of people all over the world less than thirty years ago.
