The Proterozoic strata in this area form a peculiar sort of wave, dubbed a "fold" by experts. It is a rare thing to come across a fold as beautifully exposed as this one.
A fold is a geological feature resulting from lateral pressures exerted against the Earth's crust, disrupting the originally level layering of strata. It appears most frequently as an undulation of the Earth's crust.
A complete fold comprises a convex part (anticline) and a concave, trough-like part (syncline). Sometimes we come across a series of strata that has been "tipped over", with the oldest strata rising to the top and the youngest sinking to the bottom. If the original sequence of the strata is unknown, we use the terms "antiform" and "synform" in referring to the parts of a fold.
