Construction activities
In 2006 we continued with the continual reconstruction of the zoological garden. The main buildings that substituted for the objects damaged by the flood in 2002 were finished in the previous year. Nevertheless we had to finalise some of them (pavilion of big cats – outside aviaries for small cats, equipment of the educational centre, the rear spaces for the new restaurant, final stages of the expositional complex of the water world and monkeys’ islands etc.) At the same time the long planned reconstructions of the older expositions were taking place as well as the works on the technical and breeding rear spaces of the zoo.
Outside aviaries for small cats
At the end of 2006 on the East side of the pavilion of big cats, there was built a row of five aviaries for small species of cats. The total area is 565 m2 and they are all approximately of the same size, the differences are mainly in the shape of the ground and in the inside design.
The aviaries have a strong concrete bedding and the back walls with the passages to the by-pass corridor and the inside dormitories. The supporting structure as well as the netting are made of steel and in the front part the aviaries are partly glazed.
The ground in the aviaries is made of backfill and a layer of soil substrate and so there can be natural plants in the aviaries. In front of the glazing there is a grass carpet laid and the remaining parts have been seeded with grass. The shade is provided by live plants – hawthorns, bushes and creeping plants. In the spaces between the aviaries there are planted the fast-growing willows.
In the aviaries the cats have natural parts of trees with hollows in them that they can use as hideouts or they can bask in the sun on the trees and watch the neighbourhood. The exposition of the fishing cats also has a pool that is just at the glazing and so the visitors can see underwater.
The main construction, the adaptations of the communications and the terrain arrangements were done by the ATOS and Čapek companies and the glazing was done by the Alfaglass company. The Ohnesorg company provided the steel constructions as well as the netting. The interior of the aviaries was designed by academic painters Drhlíková and Coufalová.
At present four species inhabit the aviaries (they are mentioned on the order from the left to the right from the visitors’ point of view): yagouarundi, clouded leopards twice (old and young pair), caracal and fishing cat.
Water World and Monkeys’ Islands – final stages
In 2005 the main part of this expositional complex was finished and what remained was the preparation and realisation of the exposition of alligators or rather gharials, shoebills, flamingos II and lemurs II.
In the year of 2006 we finished the complete project for the exposition of gharials, obtained the official permit for the building and started the realisation of the construction that will be finished in 2007.
The building action called Shoebills includes in fact the construction of new outside as well as inside expositions for shoebills flamingos and lemurs. The action started in 2005, continued in 2006 when the pavilion for flamingos and lemurs was built. These objects will be completely finished in the first half of 2007.
Technical rear spaces II
From 2005 the planned realisation of the second stage of building the workshop continued. The construction was finished completely in June 2006 and we also obtained the official approval for that building. In the course of the year we also finished the projection of the storage object, the adaptations of the fencing and the surrounding reinforced areas. The preparation of the project for the car park, washing point and filling station was delayed due to legislative problems and it will continue in the following year.
Hyenas and llamas
In 2006 we finished the complete preparation of the project, obtained the official permit and started the construction itself. We are planning to finish it in 2007.
Children’s zoo – final stages
In the neighbourhood of the Children’s area that had been built in 2004, we built an aviary for budgerigars and other small exotic birds in 2006.
Pavilion of Indonesian Jungle – exposition of the gibbons
As these animals are potentially dangerous for people and they had learnt how to untie the netting, it was absolutely necessary to substitute for the plastic net by a net made of steel ropes. At the same time we built a new communication passage from the bedroom boxes right to the outside aviary so that hey can go out without entering the inside exposition.
Reconstruction of the reinforced areas and underground services
This action solves the problem of continual reconstruction and improvement of the fencing of the whole area, individual ranges and reinforced areas in the whole area of the Prague zoo, including the viewpoints for the visitors and feeding spots in the ranges. This year we worked mainly on the car park for the handicapped on wheelchairs, the roads and reinforced areas at the pavilion of big cats, leopards and Barbary sheep, the fencing at the maintenance area, reindeer, moose, antelopes, leopards and also the reconstruction and improvements of the viewpoint at the Game Park.
Not budgeted Machinery and Equipment
In 2006 we still continued with the renewal of the written-off or old machines and equipment. We mainly purchased three electric vehicles John Deere, air screening to the Sichuan pavilion and to the Gaston gallery, enlargement of the cashier system, an inhalation device and a narcotising gun.
Aviaries for the birds of prey
This year we continued with the reconstruction of the expositional aviaries for the birds of prey in the bottom part of the zoo and we realised two new aviaries.
Gastronomic rear spaces and storage rooms
As the attendance rates are so high we have to improve the services for the visitors as well. It was necessary to add more storage room and operational rear spaces so that the restaurants could fully satisfy the visitors. Therefore we realised the building of a storage and operational object at the Gaston restaurant and prepared the originally not planned complete reconstruction of the interior of the Arch restaurant.
Breeding rear spaces
In 2005 we finished the project for the “Stable B” and for the last remaining part of the complex of African house and the breeding spaces. The process of getting the official permit started but the owner of the adjacent property appealed several times without any reason. After the repeated survey on the spot the relevant administration released the official permit the end of the year of 2006. Unfortunately the preparatory works for the realisation of the building were delayed and therefore we had to postpone the beginning of the action.
Realisation of the measures for energy saving
The City Council of Prague provided a special grant for this action and it was completely realised in 2006 as planned. The thermostatic valves were fixed namely in the pavilion of big cats, pavilion of tortoises, pavilion of big mammals, in the buildings of maintenance, in the car park and at the farm.
Reconstruction of the underground services
In 2006 we prepared the processing of a validation study for a new delivery water main to the water tank for water for industrial purposes, a pumping trial test at all the consumption spots and a processing of a mathematic model of the potential usage of the resources of ground water in the area of the zoo. In this way we prepared for the optimal usage of ground water and obtained real groundwork for the prepared reconstruction of the underground services.
Reconstruction of the linear exposition
In 2006 we finished the projection, obtained the official permit and started the realisation of the building. We are planning to finish he action in 2007.
Expositional pool for the sea lions
The complete preparation of the project for building the new exposition for the visitors, the pool and the dormitory was finished. We are planning to start the realisation of the building in the second half of 2007, i.e. after we obtain the official permit for the building.
Information system
The action when we wanted to improve the information system by the installation of three information stalls started at the very end of 2006 and it will be finished in 2007. Apart from that we started to renew all the name tags in the area of the zoo. The present type of nametags was not suitable any more from the aesthetic as well as functional point of view. It will be continually substituted by wooden modules with variable system of information that was designed by the union KVADRA. At the first stage we prepared more than fifty name tags.
Small constructions
This year we realised the installation of the lockers for the visitors at all the entrances to the Prague zoo, a wooden shelter at the Arch and namely the installation of 58 pieces of information panels with the nametags in the whole area of the zoo.
Reconstruction of the technical equipment of the buildings
The action solves the continual renewal and reconstruction of the old technical equipment of in the buildings within the area of the zoo. This year we realised the reconstruction of the lighting in the storage of boxes, we added the lighting in the educational centre, added the technical equipment of the buildings (lightning rods, watering and filtration systems) in the pavilion of big cats and in the Northern forest and we installed the compensative chokes in the transformation station.
Reconstruction of Černohouska
The immovable cultural heritage Černohouska is a baroque winemaker house that for many years functioned as a residential building. It does not fulfil now even the most basic requirements, namely hygienic, for lodging. At present the object is free and the Prague zoo is preparing its reconstruction so that there could be a gastronomic premises with vast outside terraces (originally a vineyard) in accordance with the Projects of development and building of the Prague zoo. The terraces will enable the visitors to relax and view the Vltava valley and the panorama of the Prague castle from a non-traditional perspective. This year we prepared the research activities there and processed a study on the usage of the object.
Reconstruction of the breeding spaces for birds
Due to the legislative delay and the comments of the neighbours the area management is still in progress. So we were not able to continue with the preparation of the project for this action and it will be started in 2007.
Pavilion of elephants – underground services and transport services
The realization of the building of the pavilion itself will be planned in the coming years. We have reached the agreement that the zoo will not be the direct investor but the Department of the City Investor will take part here. The department has already started further preparation work on the project. As the construction of the pavilion of elephants and the neighbouring objects as well as surrounding areas will be very demanding for the coordination of underground services, transport and services for the visitors, we have started in advance the work on preparation of the project for the solution of the whole area in order to be able to coordinate the particular suppliers of project documentation and realisers of the construction.
