The pavilion of Indonesian Jungle

The pavilion of Indonesian Jungle was opened on 29th November 2004.

The pavilion of Indonesian Jungle was opened on 29th November 2004. It is the largest and also the most expensive object that has ever been built for animals in the Czech zoos. It stands at the place where used to be the old pavilion of monkeys. It had to be demolished in 1999 due to its critical condition. The aim of the pavilion is to create a perfect illusion of the tropical environment in the rainforests of Southeast Asia. All the animals and plants that live in this pavilion come from this area. The pavilion is namely designed for primates (orangutans, gibbons, macaques, leaf monkeys), it is enriched by a special collection of animals that are active at night (for example flying phalangers, brush-tailed possums, brush-tailed bettongs, flying foxes etc.), then there are fresh water as well as brackish aquaria with more than 40 species of fish, an open terrarium for Komodo dragons and other water bodies for numerous species of endangered turtles and collections of freely moving birds. The structure of the species and the numbers of the animals are not final and will be continually added in accordance with the possibilities of the garden and the experience with operation of the pavilion. From the expositional, technical as well as artificial point of view, the pavilion is really an original piece of work. Apart from the supplied technologies, only Czech firms and individuals took part in building it.

The expositional area of the pavilion is to imitate an adventurous journey into the jungle. It is generously divided horizontally as well as vertically. There are narrow paths with views into the jungle, cave hallways, expositions in the mud and the aquaria, terraces with views of the monkeys on the islands, vast water bodies and a roaring waterfall. The exposition has got two floors and it has got its day and night parts. It is possible to cover the exposition partly in fog or rain. All the spaces in the pavilion are accessible for immobile visitors and prams.

The key element of the interior consists of the artificial rocks made of structured concrete and giant trees made of laminate, using special technologies. There are altogether 19 of these giants in the exposition. The biggest one is 16 metres tall and weighs 2 tons. In the exposition there are planted 1,600 specimens of live plants coming from Southeast Asia, including several-metres-tall full-grown trees. The part of the exposition that is located above the ground is filled with 2-kilometre-long tangle of real lianas.

The president of the Czech Republic Mr Václav Klaus and the ambassador of the Indonesian Republic Mr Santoso Rahardjo were present at the ceremonial opening.
