The first young gorilla in the Czech zoos

A young lowland gorilla in the Czech zoos was born on 13th December 2004 in the Prague zoo.

A historical event took place on Monday 13th December 2004 in the Prague zoo: a young lowland gorilla was born, the first one in the history of all the zoological gardens in the Czech Republic. The breeder discovered the baby in the arms of its mother Kijivu at 6.45 in the morning. In order to provide peace for the baby and the mother (as the first 48 hours are determining for the natural development of the baby) we kept the pavilion closed for the visitors in the beginning. We were afraid as we did not want to separate the baby from its mother if she did not want to or could not breastfeed it.

From the very beginning Kijivu proved to be a perfect mother, the baby started to suck itself and got stuck to its mother’s hair. The second female Shinda was from the start very much interested in the new member of the family. At first Kijivu did not want to show her the baby but later she let Shinda to sleep with them and observe the baby. The father Richard did not show much interest in the beginning and only after a week he started to peep at his offspring.

After one more week we are almost sure that the baby is a girl. It gets the Swahili name Moja, which means the first. The baby keeps growing and getting stronger and continually the mother lets the other female to touch the baby. At the age of one month the little baby is interested in the things around her, watches everything carefully and plays in her mothers arms.
