“The birth of the cub, whose mother is called Abeba and father is called Meloun, took place on a Wednesday night 18th May to Thursday 19th May 2011. Breeders have separated the small seal cub and his mother from the rest of the group and placed them in a secluded part of the enclosure,“ said Miroslav Bobek, director of Prague’s ZOO.
A vet has checked the cub and done the basic post birth examination. “So far everything looks in order. The cub weighs 5.5 kg and from the look of it and is also suckling well. We are keeping our fingers crossed because all is not won yet,” stated Mr Antonín Vaidl guardian of Prague’s ZOO.
The cub is dependent on his mum who will feed him for approximately a year. Initially the cub has to stay on dry land because its fur is water absorbent and without protection the cub could drown, he will probably start to brave the water from two months onwards.
