Przewalski Horses From Prague Have a Foal

The mare Cassovia, a Przewalski horse from Prague Zoo which was transported last year to the Mongolian reservation of Khomiin Tal, gave birth to a female foal. The birth went smoothly.

In June 2011, Prague Zoo transported four Przewalski horses - Cassovia, Lima, Kordula and a stallion Matyáš - to the Mongolian reservation of Khomiin Tal to revive the smallest of the three Przewalski horse populations in Mongolia. The mission has been a success. Cassovia was born on 26th August 2006 in Košice Zoo. Her father Xeron from Prague Zoo was placed in Košice in August 2005, as part of a breeding programme.

“The first anniversary of the independent Czech transport of Przewalski horses to Mongolia is approaching and we received the best possible present. Cassovia gave birth to a foal and both Lima and Kordula are pregnant. Our Mongolian colleagues expect Kordula to give birth any day now,“ said Miroslav Bobek, Director of Prague Zoo.

Prague Zoo played a key role in saving the Przewalski horses from extinction. By organizing the independent Czech transport, it participated in the return of the last wild horse into the wild. Last year transport of the four horses to Mongolia was organized by Prague Zoo in co-operation with the Army of the CR, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Mongolia and with the French association for Przewalski horses “Takh”.
